Beyond Montessori: 3 Must-Read Books Recommended by Madhuri Prasad

Posted on April 28, 2024April 28, 2024 by Katherine
We love reading things related to education but I am sure this is not the only thing we all read about. There are also other important and interesting topics, sometimes complicated reads, sometimes easy reads, and just reading for fun.

In this new series of posts, I am asking Montessorians to recommend us 3 books unrelated to Montessori, education, or parenting.

Lets learn about each other from other perspectives and get great book recommendations. It is always interesting to see what other people are reading.

Today Madhuri Prasad from The Little Leaps was kind to share her book choices with us.

Unstoppable Us, Volume 1: How Humans Took Over the World

by Yuval Noah Harari

This book was a gift to my daughter after she read and loved the authors other bestselling book Sapiens. Little did I anticipate that I would end up reading this book, completely engrossed in it.

The book delves into how humans evolved into superpowers, outmaneuvering formidable beasts like lions and tigers. It elucidates how our primal instincts, deeply embedded in our collective memory, influence our reactions, from fear of the dark to cravings for sugary treats.

While intended for children, the book appeals to adults as well, thanks to its engaging narrative. Its simple language allows me to connect with children while sharing the stories within.

I found it highly educational, learning a great deal in the process. This approach to history, devoid of a barrage of facts, makes learning enjoyable and accessible. Reflecting on its impact, I couldn’t help but wish I had been introduced to history in such a captivating manner; perhaps I would have harbored aspirations of becoming an archaeologist.

The Essential Rumi

by Jalaluddin Rumi (translated by Coleman Barks)

I love ‘The Essential Rumi’ for its timeless wisdom and poetic brilliance. Coleman Barks’s translation beautifully captures the essence of Rumi’s spiritual insights, which remain as relevant today as they were in the thirteenth century.

Organized into 28 categories based on recurring motifs rather than conventional literary forms, the book presents Rumi’s profound observations on themes like love, separation, and union with crystal-clear clarity. Each section is preceded by a brief reflection that adds context to Rumi’s life and writings.

Through his poems, Rumi explores universal truths and offers profound advice that transcends religious boundaries. His words are both soothing and playful, celebrating the full spectrum of human emotions and experiences.

Whenever I lose sight in life, I just pick one poem to read. It gives peace and calm to the mind more than any meditation or medication.

The deep wisdom in his writing such as “Listen when your crown reminds you of what makes you cold towards others, as you pamper the greedy energy inside” resonates with a timeless spiritual essence that speaks to the human soul.

Anne of Green Gables

by Lucy Maud Montgomery

This wonderful classic has nestled deep within my heart since my youth, resonating as one of my most cherished reads. Anne, the protagonist, embodies qualities I deeply admire: a vibrant enthusiasm for life and a gift for spreading joy to those around her, inspiring me to appreciate life’s simple pleasures and break free from my own inhibitions.

I recently shared its captivating tale with my daughter, experiencing its narrative charm once again.

With its series of 8 books, the story draws readers into its world, forging deep connections with its characters as they navigate life’s joys and sorrows.

Montgomery’s engaging writing style keeps readers invested in Anne’s journey, making every mishap endearing. This cherished book evokes fond memories of past readings, ensuring its enduring place in my heart.
