Art Appreciation: Level 2. Matching the paintings of famous artists

We are going further in our art study. Next stage is matching paintings of famous artists.

After learning about art in general, we can now start looking in details at the art of painting. The first thing we need to do is to get familiar with famous paintings. 

This material goes in two sizes. You can choose to work with bigger or smaller cards (I use smaller ones). 

Material consists of 

38 normal size cards
38 big size cards
38 labels with "portrait of artist-his name-painting name" 
38 labels with name of artist and painting name
Control table with all the painters and paintings

Each card should have the name of the artist, his portrait and painting name on the back side. And this is a very IMPORTANT thing! Some people ask me why haven't I made this cards in the form of 3-part cards and why this material hasn't got names on the front side. Here is why. As you know all Montessori materials have one main aim. Then, of course, there are some extensions for using every material but in the beginning, every material is made to learn just one thing. Like we use color tablets only for learning colors and not for learning to count for example. Here you can observe such quality of Montessori method as isolation of difficulty. It means that we don't teach several concepts at once. We give everything separately. Firstly we learn to cut with scissors and then how to cut difficult forms, like waves, for example, but not at once.

So why haven't I made this material in the form of 3-part cards? Because 3-part cards help the Child to learn new words, extend his vocabulary, to connect visual representation of the thing and its name. And the main idea of this material is not learning names! Here we just get acquainted with works of art, we look at them closely, we try to see the beauty in them, we discuss them, we share our opinions. 

And then, as the next level, we can learn their names. 
I usually use learning names activity a lot later. I start art appreciation with toddlers, we just match paintings and then go to the next level. And when I see that it is the time I go back to this material and learn the names of famous painters and paintings. So don't concentrate on learning names here. 

That is why I made the cards in the way that there should be a label on the back of every painting.

So when the Child is ready you start looking at the back, learning the name of the painting and name of the author. 

Preparing material for work:

1. Choose the size of the cards you want to work with.
- Normal-size cards have 4 cards on one page. 
- Big-size cards have 2 cards on one page.
2. Print cards in two copies.
3. Print all the labels
4. Cut all the cards.
5. Glue the cards with photos of artists+their names+names of the paintings to the back of the corresponding paintings. Control table from pages 41-44 will help you to match labels to paintings, it exists to make the preparing of the materials easier.
6. Laminate everything.

Also, there are a lot of cards and I advise to separate them at several sets like I did. This is one of my sets. When the Child is ready you can use more and more cards.

How to use the material:

1. Take one set of cards and line them up along the left side of the mat. If there are a large number of cards, use two columns.

2. Take the pair of one card and compare it to the first card already on the mat.

3. If they don’t match compare it to the next card, and so forth.
4. Continue until all matches are found.

Then when Child already enjoyed matching the paintings we can now learn their painters and names. I advice starting even with one or a couple of paintings, because this way the Child will remember it better. In this situation, the possibility of error is minimal and it will form the situation of success for the Child and it so fourth will stimulate his interest for learning.

1. Take the painting card and show it to the child. Tell its names. Put the paintings in a row

2. Take the name card, read it out loud and put it to the corresponding card

3. When all the cards are done, turn them to the back side and compare names of the artists and paintings. This way Child will understand how the control of error works here.

If the Child can read give him the opportunity to read labels.

  4. Hi, may I know the cards should print on what type of paper? Photo paper or normal 80g paper? What is your recommendation? Tq

    1. You can print it on normal paper, but I think it is better to be printed on a bit thicker one. I often use not very thick photo paper, the cards turn out to be not so brigh like photos (what I like) and they look like postcards that is my aim. Then I laminate them.
      I recieved advice to print cards on bright photo paper and than laminate them with mat lamination. I was not satisfied with result at all. Mat lamination is not for me.
